Bowmore "Old Malt Cask" 21 Year Old K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

SKU #1418353

Bowmore offers one of the most unusual dichotomies in Scotland. They make some of the finest whisky available, they floor malt roughly a quarter of their barley in-house, they have vast stocks of exceptional whisky, yet the core expressions from the distillery always seem a touch lack luster. They're filtered and proofed way back, sure, but the raw materials are so good that you wouldn't expect it present so glaringly. This is where the independent cask market thrives. The freedom to bottle at full proof and without filtration or additives allows for the hard work done at the distillery to shine. The singular intensity of this cask is unmatched in the Bowmore portfolio. The peat flavors are so perfectly meshed with barley that it takes a long time to pick it apart. There is an amazing tropical nose and sweetness to the palate. It feels like you're at the breakfast buffet in Hawaii but the smoke from last nights luau still clings to everything. A bit of salt air carries from start to finish. This whisky has verve. Thanks to our direct relationships in Scotland, all of this is available for prices that look an awful lot like previous years despite getting whacked with the absurd 25% tariffs.

This is a wonderful single barrel of Bowmore. It is lively, delicious and interesting. I tasted it with and with out water. With out water the nose is expressive with the smoke notes dominating the experience. In the mouth there are smoke and sweet malt flavors. It was better with a splash of water that opened the single malt up. Smoke still dominated the nose . In the mouth there are flavors of smoke and sweet malt but it is more complex and there is a savory undertone. Also, there is a nice creamy mouth feel and a long finish.

It's not every day that we get something special like this from Islay's oldest distillery. I was giddy, checking our system constantly to see when it would land so I could finally get my hands on a bottle and as I sit nosing the first pour I must say, I wasn't prepared for how complex this would be. Beyond the smoke and peat of Isaly that I've come to love so much the whiskey opened with such a unique note that I had to get a second opinion from my colleagues, but it was there! Bubble gum lingers just behind the smoke quickly turning towards cinnamon red hots. The salt with sweet confectionery candies, spice, savory earth and that warm inviting peat roll together into this perfect dram. For fans of Islay you can't miss this, this is no ordinary Bowmore, it is something special!

I started by adding water to this dram. It felt a little tight and restrained by the abv in the glass but opened up nicely with a few drops of water. On the nose I got notes of salted caramel apple, oak spice, and nougat. The palate was a bit spicy but picked up some grassy, smokey notes, and then something that triggered a childhood memory: See’s butterscotch lollipop, right in the midpalate, which greatly increased my opinion of this dram. A light brine rolled into a spicy and woody finish.
