K&L Notes

Winemaker's Notes: "This complex and layered wine is opaque and dark-cherry red in appearance with bright and enticing aromas of leather, smoked meat, cedar, brown sugar and wild blackberry. On the palate it is extremely balanced with a beautiful dark fruit entry followed by a full mid-palate weighted with dark chocolate, cinnamon, vanilla and soft, persistent tannins. The structured Cabernet Sauvignon blended with the powerful, hedonistic and elegant Rhone varieties from our Estate vineyard complement each other perfectly in this seamless and supple wine."

Alluring aromas of lilac petals, subtle licorice and creme de cassis. The wine is powerful, deep and dark fruited with plum, blackcurrant and boysenberry. Underpinning this ripe, rich fruit are lovely savory components of shaved truffle and freshly turned earth. Full bodied and saturated but with complex umami / soil driven notes (perhaps from the biodynamic farming). Fine but firm tannins give shape and definition to the hedonistic fruit, and balanced acidity brings persistence and precision to the finish. Very classy. Philippe Melka's pedigree is on full display and at a price that is unheard of for his wines.

This is a show stopper. The nose is mixed berries and spice. The palate is lush and round yet structured. The wine is charming and then I was told it was a Cabernet Rhone blend and I was 100% in. Syrah, Grenache, and Cabernet are great dancing partners. The prior soften the later and the Cab gives a framework for the fruit of the prior to play off of. I wish there are more winemakers willing to play with these blends. All they need to do is try this and they will see the light.

The “Legend” in the name must be referring to the one and and only, winemaker extraordinaire Philippe Melka. Philippe has made a career out of making other people famous. He has created some of the most sought-after, top-scoring wines from California for over two decades. With this inaugural release, he’s doing it for himself. This fascinating hypothetical meeting of Bordeaux and Chateauneuf-du-Pape is really quite intriguing. The flavor profile is an amalgam of red and black fruits with a hint of leather and earth all framed by ripe, soft, dusty tannins and quite a long finish. It tastes like the perfect steakhouse wine as I cannot image a more perfectly suited wine. I anticipate that this will be making lots of new friends once the corks get pulled.

Country:

United States

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world.
Sub-Region:

California

- With the explosive growth that California's wine industry has seen the past several years, it's easy to view winemaking and grape growing in the Golden State as a recent phenomenon. And while it's true that California's viticultural history is brief compared to several European countries, this state's roots date back well over 200 years. Due to the enormous response to California wine within the United States and worldwide, there are thousands of excellent and diverse wines being produced within the state each year.
Specific Appellation:

Sonoma County

- Second in fame only to Napa, this "other" valley offers just about every climate and topography imaginable. From its cool and fog-enshrouded coastal regions on the far west, to the sprawling Alexander Valley on the boarder of Napa and the many little dips and peaks in between, Sonoma has been a vital wine-grape-growing region since the mid 1800s. Important sub-AVAs include Chalk Hill (known for chardonnay and sauvignon blanc), Dry Creek Valley (where zin is king) Knights Valley (largely cabernet land), Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast (both celebrated pinot and chardonnay zones).
