2015 Petra Zingari Toscana

SKU #1385738 94 points James Suckling

Beautiful aromas of cherries, dark chocolate and lemon rind, following through to a full body with round and chewy tannins. Yet, it is polished and soft. A juicy finish. A blend of Merlot, Sangiovese, Syrah and Petit Verdot. Drink or hold. (9/2018)

92 points Wine Spectator

Bright, ripe cherry and plum fruit flavors offset the savory tobacco, earth and herb notes in this plump red, which is balanced despite the exuberant tannins, while vivid acidity keeps the long aftertaste focused. Best from 2022 through 2033. (BS) (4/2019)

Vittorio Moretti is best known for his Franciacorta wineries Bellavista and Contadi Castaldi but he purchased land in the Tuscan Coast area of Val di Cornia many years ago and his daughter Francesca has been at the helm crafting outstanding red and white wines. Her approach of late has been to produce elegant wines with finesse that capture the essence of the grapes and their environs. This shift away from the oakier style reds popular in the 1990s and early 2000s has taken her wines to a new level. The Zingari is a wonderful medium-bodied Tuscan red that combines rich red fruit flavors supported by fresh acidity. Hats off to Francesca Moretti. Bravo!

This equal parts Merlot/Syrah/Sangiovese/Petit Verdot blend is a departure from what I usually reach for in the Italian section but I was intrigued and brought it to dinner with friends; it far exceeded our expectations! This is a super flavorful, medium-bodied wine packed with plush, ripe red fruit, a hint of cocoa powder on the nose and tannins that gently coat the palate. Plus, it finishes with a nice acidic pop on the finish that left us smacking our lips. This is fantastic stuff - a superb value, great for weeknight drinking, party going, or friendly gifting.

The nose is classic"Super Tuscan", ripe cherries and strawberries and a hint of coco powder. On the palate of this medium-bodied wine, you will find the fruit describe above with a touch of minerals and soft tannins, which gives this wine a very lush feel to the palate and has an incredible long finish. Turn down the heat in your house; this will keep you warm on chilly winter evening!

The nose of this wine was captivating from the get go, I had expected a innocuous flow of overripe fruit but this wine has an incredible nose full of vibrant, focused fruit character, you can smell the Sangiovese’s cherry like brilliance, the warm cassis of the Merlot and Petit Verdot and the spice from the Syrah. On the palate I was once again a surprised, excellent balance with a lifting acidity that freshens and focuses the fruit array. The flavors are bold yet restrained and the wine has a supple feel across your tongue. The finish is long and persistent, it really holds the flavors for a long time, an excellent wine at a steal of a price.

Sometimes, with red blends, you get a one noted wine where all the grape's personal characteristics are masked by another. It is fruity but flat. Luckily, with the Petra Zingari each grape is able to shine, bringing their unique personality into this complex bargain wine. Merlot, the dominant grape, shows its beauty in the ripe red and black berries and smooth tannins. The Syrah brings its spicy attitude while the Petit Verdot not only gives the wine its beautiful purple color, but lends itself to the acidity that keeps your mouth watering. After it all, those stunning fruity yet savory Sangiovese flavors of Chinese plum takes you home with a long, flavor filled finish.
