Winemaking is simple (the wine completes malolactic fermentation in oak) in order to preserve that succulent and rich quality of fruit. This wine puts the dolce (or "sweet") in Dolcetto. Another must-have red from one of our favorite producers, not only from Italy, but in our entire Direct Import portfolio. One of the oldest estates in the Langhe, Fratelli Barale was founded in 1870, shortly after the Barolo denomination was created. Sergio Barale and his daughters manage the estate today! The wines are incredible quality and the prices are astounding. The staff always has a case or two of Barale tucked away, and it sells out at lightning speed every vintage. This Dolcetto is a food-pairing dream, with lifted cherry fruit and nimble lightness on the palate. This is equally at home with spicy pasta as it would be at a Thanksgiving feast. Plus, the new arrivals from 2017 - a hot, showy vintage - are drinking beautifully now. Get some while you can and elevate your dinner table.

Wow!!! This definitely gets THREE Stars from me, what a mouthful of wine. The elegant perfumes will entice you to want to jump into the glass; medium to full-bodied and very supple with overripe cherries, blackberries, bittersweet chocolate and lots of minerals with some tannins. This wine has such great structure it will stand the test of time, the big problem will be keeping enough around to potently age it. Thinking risottos dishes or a grilled Portobello mushroom, but honestly I am actually drinking this one all by itself with some dried cheese and salami.

This starts with huge aromas of raspberry syrup that will fool you into thinking the wine is sweet. The body is round and filled with sweet black cherries and ripe dark plums and a note of bitter chocolate, This easy to like and food friendly deep purple wine finishes fruity and dry. A super delicious bargain that doesn't take itself too seriously.

I have liked all of the wines that I have tasted from Fratelli Barale. The 2017 Dolcetto is no exception. It is bright and lively with a deep dark color. Nice fresh and juicy fruit flavors are balanced out with a clean crisp finish. Ready to drink now, it will go well with pizza or hearty foods.

Pretty is the first word that came to mind upon nosing this Dolcetto D' Alba. It greets you with aromas of black cherry, violets, and almonds. The racy acidity along with the softer tannins combine to make this a super food-friendly wine. This would be a perfect accompaniment to salumi, braised meats or antipasti. Tremendous value.

This biodynamic gem of a Dolcetto is an awesome wine at a crazy low price.With surprisingly apparent acidity from a grape not really known for it, "Le Rose" has a great rosewater nose and a mouthful of dark plum wrapped velvety body. The pleasing chocolate note at the end of the palette is a nice finish and helps make this a fantastic pairing for meat sauces or homemade hamburgers.

Because 2017 was such a warm year in Piemonte, we expected this wine to be a bit riper and higher in alcohol than usual yet Barale was able to deliver another exceptional Dolcetto at 13.5% with unexpected weight and concentration. It's rich and round with a touch of tannins and loads of fruit on the finish. This impressive dry red is a huge hit with customers and staff alike. Great for everyday evening fare.

- How could you not love a great with a name that means "little sweet one?" But don't let that deceive you. This varietal, grown in Italy's Piedmont, may be a low-acid, fruit-forward red, but it can also have significant tannic structure, particularly those from the Dogliani DOC. Traditionally vinified dry, wines made from Dolcetto tend to have a sweet edge to them, with ripe red fruit flavors and perfumed bouquets. According to the Oxford Companion to Wine, many producers have learned to manage its tannic edge with shorter fermentation. There are a total of seven DOCs that produce Dolcetto: Dolcetto d'Aqui, Dolcetto d'Asti, Dolcetto di Diano d'Alba, Dolcetto delle Langhe Monregalesi, Dolcetto di Dolgiani, Dolcetto di Ovada and Dolcetto d'Alba. Dolcetto is also grown in the Italy's Liguria where it is called Ormeasco.


- Once named Enotria for its abundant vineyards, Italy (thanks to the ancient Greeks and Romans) has had an enormous impact on the wine world. From the shores of Italy, the Romans brought grapes and their winemaking techniques to North Africa, Spain and Portugal, Germany, France, the Danube Valley, the Middle East and even England. Modern Italy, which didn't actually exist as a country until the 1870s, once produced mainly simple, everyday wine. It wasn't until the 1970s that Italy began the change toward quality. The 1980s showed incredible efforts and a lot of experimentation. The 1990s marked the real jump in consistent quality, including excellence in many Region that had been indistinct for ages. The entire Italian peninsula is seeing a winemaking revolution and is now one of the most exciting wine Region in the world.


- Piedmont is in the Northwestern region of Italy, bordering France and Switzerland. Piedmont is predominantly a plain where the water flows from the Swiss and French Alps to form the headwaters of the Po river. The major wine producing areas are in the southern portion of the region in the hills known as the "Langhe". Here the people speak a dialect that is 1/3 French and 2/3 Italian that portrays their historical roots. Their cuisine is one of the most creative and interesting in Italy. Nebbiolo is the King grape here, producing Barolo and Barbaresco. In addition, the Barbera and Dolcetto are the workhorse grapes that produce the largest quantity of wine. Piedmont is predominantly a red wine producing area. There are a few whites made in Piedmont, and the Moscato grape produces a large volume of sweet, semi-sweet and sparkling wines as well.
