2017 Pennrose Wines "Shake Ridge Ranch" Amador County Grenache

Winemaker's Notes: "This vineyard above Sutter Creek in the Sierra Foothills expresses the warm summer days that cool quickly with evening mountain air to provide ripeness and structure. This vineyard is farmed by Ann Kraemer, who is pioneering a renaissance of quality in the Sierra Foothills, and she impresses us in so many ways with her integrative approach to her mountain site. This wine found the light, bright side to Grenache with a soft palate of strawberries and juiciness. 13.4% alc. Pennrose Wine is the project of Ria D'Aversa and Mike Penn, who ...

2008 Saxum "James Berry Vineyard" Paso Robles Rhône Blend

98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "I had previously reviewed the 2008 Saxum James Berry Vineyard from a tasting at the winery, so it was enlightening to get to sit down, and drink through a full bottle. A blend of 52% Grenache, 31% Mourvèdre, and 17% Syrah, aged for 19 months in puncheons and smaller barrels, it presents an unabashedly Californian profile that oozes sweet fruit and flesh, but balances it with a seamless, weightless texture and perfect balance. Notes of sweet crème de cassis, raspberry, smoked meats, and flowers all soar from the glass and are follo ...

2017 Pheasant's Tears Rkatsiteli Kakheti Republic of Georgia

Before the Greeks, before the Romans, it was the Georgians who were making wine. Archeological evidence dates back 8,000 years and references to Georgian wines can be found in the writings of Homor and Apollonius, and even the Georgian alphabet seems to have its origins in the shapes made by the tendrils of grape vines. Pheasant's Tears is the joint effort of American John Wurdeman, Georgian Gela Patalishvili, and Swedes Erik Andermo, Jakob Mörndal, and Henrik Callerstrand. They work to preserve and promote this ancient cultural legacy. All of Pheasant's ...

2013 Cayuse "Cailloux Vineyard" Walla Walla Valley Syrah

96 points Wine Spectator: "Broad and expressive, playing the cherry, raspberry and pear notes against fine tannins. Picks up tobacco, tar and mineral notes as the finish sails on. Has terrific presence without weight. *#37 Top 100 Wines of 2016* (HS)" (08/2016) 95 points Vinous: "(15% new oak; this was the first vineyard planted in what is now known as the Rocks District, back in 1997): Good medium-deep red. Compellingly complex, high-toned aromas of raspberry, brown spices, olive tapenade, smoked sausage, lilac and black licorice are lifted by a flora ...

2003 Araujo "Altagracia" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend (bin soiled label)

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Araujo’s second wine, Altagracia, is almost too good to be true. There are 750 cases of the 2003 Altagracia, a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, and 6% Petit Verdot. It is much more fruit-forward than its bigger sibling, but definitely displays the Eisele Vineyard style in its deep purple color, sweet nose of flowers, crushed rocks, blueberries, creme de cassis, and earth, super-sweet tannin, well-integrated acidity, and opulent personality. 2007 Saxum "James Berry Vineyard" Paso Robles Rhône Blend

100 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2007 James Berry Vineyard has been incredibly consistent for me and was as good as it gets on this occasion. More seamless, silky and elegant than the Heartstone, it has sensational notes of kirsch, black cherries, garrigue, dried herbs and licorice in a seamless, ultra-elegant, polished profile. Incredible in every sense, and a reference point wine both for the estate and the region, it has opened up beautifully since release and is drinking gorgeously today. This is one of those wines I wish I could pour for every reader." ...

2013 Shafer "Hillside Select" Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon

99 points James Suckling: "Wonderful floral aromas with perfumed roses plus hints of blackcurrants and spearmint. Full-bodied and so powerful and muscular but always showing the brightness and beauty of fruit. Winemakers say this reminds them of the 1978, their first year. It certainly has the structure — "those tannins" as they put it. Finish is so impressive with tar, iron and spices. " (01/2018) 98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select will probably hit the magic three-digit score, but it is a more backwa ...

2008 Chappellet "Pritchard Hill Estate" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

95 points James Suckling: "I am a big fan of this wine every year. The 2008 shows beautiful aromas of dried flowers and spices with chocolate underneath. The palate is full and very velvety with lots of intensity and flavor in the finish. Racy, elegant and finesse are words that come to mind to describe this wine. Best in two or three years." (06/2011) 93 points Connoisseurs Guide: "As one would expect of this wine based on its past performances in our tastings, it is tight and deep at one and the same time, and for all of its concentrated fruit in bot ...

2009 Saxum "James Berry Vineyard" Paso Robles Rhône Blend

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Simply put, the 2009 James Berry Vineyard is one of the greatest young wines I have ever tasted from California, or anywhere for that matter. Bright, floral aromatics lead to expressive red fruit in this impossibly elegant, dazzling wine. A melange of rose petals, mint and licorice follows as the James Berry shows off its breathtaking clarity and finesse. Fine-grained, chalky tannins frame the exceptional finish. Frankly, I am surprised this is the first wine of the tasting. Where does one go from here? (AG)" (08 ...

2012 Rhys "Horseshoe Vineyard" Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir

95 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Ruby-red. Explosively perfumed cherry-cola, dark berry liqueur, incense and mineral aromas show superb clarity and depth, with a sexy floral quality building with air. Offers palate-staining black raspberry and spicecake flavors that become sweeter and deeper with air. This rich but strikingly lithe and tensile pinot deftly plays power and depth off of vivacity and finishes sweet, youthfully tannic and extremely long. One of the most impressive Pinots I've tasted from the New World, or Burgundy for t ...

1998 Pahlmeyer Napa Valley Merlot

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1998 Merlot is light, but it is undoubtedly one of the finest Merlots produced in this irregular vintage. A blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc (1,750 cases), Jayson Pahlmeyer and winemaker Erin Green decided to eliminate 38% of the wine. Full-bodied, thick, and juicy, with low acidity as well as melted chocolate, cherry, smoke, and toast aromas and flavors ... This ripe, sexy example of Marsanne has terrific purity, no hard edges, and good freshness. It’s a terrific value that will keep for 2-4 years. It looks like a solid repeat of the 2015. (JC)" (12/2018) 91-92 points Vinous: "Bright violet color. Seems just a shade less complete, although it’s still a dazzling wine. " (10/2005) Wine Spectator: "Dark, with dusty cedar, plum, cigar box and black cherry aromas that fold over to the palate, offering a smooth, balanced concentration of flavors. Full-bodied with loads of potency, and a hot finish, it should be enjoyed with cheese dishes or at the end of the meal, as one would with an Italian Amarone. While not a big wine by Turley’s standards, it is impeccably well made. (RP)" (05/2003) Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Medium ruby-red. 2011 Littorai "The Haven" Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

Then dense, tactile and sweet in the mouth yet light on its feet, with the red berry fruit nicely framed by bright acidity and complicated by a saline element. This brisk, spicy wine is attractive already but its suave tannins and long finish suggest that it will be even better with some time in bottle. Lemon picked these vines in two passes, the first on September 30 (i.e., before the rains) and the ...

Structure with finesse and purity. The tannins are melted in the wine. Fabulous young wine. Try tasting it from 2023." (02/2019) 96 points Vinous: "The 2016 Canon La Gaffelière is just as striking from bottle as it was from barrel. Bright, intensely aromatic and precise, the 2016 has it all. 2017 Gen del Alma "Ji Ji Ji" Malbec/Pinot Noir Gualtallary (Previously $18)

Gen d'A is yet another Michelini brothers project, started by Gerardo Michelini and his wife Andrea Mufatto. They use fruit grown on a single vineyard in Gualtallary (within the Tupungato sub-zone). In contrast with the prior vintage, this 2017 is a bit brawnier, showcasing Malbec perhaps a bit more than Pinot, but still with lovely dark berry fruit flavors and an impressive, sturdy structure. Expressive, interesting wine from the new wave in Argentina!
