1998 Domaine Gourt de Mautens (Jérôme Bressy) Rasteau

Robert Parker writes: "This is one of the sensational estates in Rasteau, with proprietor Jerome Bressy farming just over 20 acres of vines. Organic farming and the naturally low yields of his old vines (8-15 hectoliters per hectare) result in wines of extraordinary concentration and intensity. The general blend on his Rasteau is 70% Grenache and the rest Syrah, Mourvedre, and Carignan."

1998 Nickel & Nickel Suscol Ranch Napa Valley Merlot

The Suscol Ranch is located at the entrance to Jamieson Canyon south of the city of Napa. The vineyard was planted in 1991. Originally planted as Merlot to be used in the blend of the estate Cabernet Sauvignon, the quality was so high that it was one of the inspirations to create the Nickel & Nickel line. They appreciated the distinctiveness of this vineyard and thought that is warranted bottling as a stand-alone wine. Very limited!

1998 Pride Mountain Napa/Sonoma Counties Merlot (1.5L)

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Sleek and elegant, the wine is blessed with fine tannins and supple texture, and its blackberry, plum, cassis, chocolate and herb flavors flood the palate in a rush that finishes long and luxuriously. Top-notch Merlot. " (12/2001) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Impressive. Espresso-style, deeply concentrated Merlot, boasting a core of rich currant, coffee, black cherry and anise. 1998 Kistler "Hirsch Vineyard" Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

93-95 points Robert Parker: "The dark ruby/purple-colored 1998 Pinot Noir Hirsch Vineyard (150 cases) has tamed some of the ferocious tannin this offering frequently exhibits. Rich, pure, and deep, with abundant quantities of black cherry fruit, spice, and pepper, this full-bodied Pinot Noir needs 4-5 years of cellaring, and should keep for 10-15 years." (01/2000)

1998 Certan de May, Pomerol

91 points Wine Spectator: "Milk chocolate with blackberry and cappuccino on the nose. Full-bodied, with a brown sugar and coffee flavor. Silky tannins. Long and caressing. Reminds me of old-style Pomerols from the '40s. This is a wine that has a lot of bottle variation, but this one is beautiful.—'88/'98 Bordeaux blind retrospective (2008). (Web-2009)"

1998 Domaine Faiveley Corton-Clos des Cortons Faiveley Grand Cru

92 points Vinous: "Good full red with a trace of amber. Very ripe Pinot aromas of redcurrant, spices, tobacco and cedar, plus hints of yellow fruits (peach, quince, pineapple). Plush, supple and fine-grained, with savory fruit, graphite and mineral flavors conveying noteworthy vinosity. Quite broad for the vintage, finishing with substantial dusty, building tannins supported by strong fruit. Another vintage that struck me as a bit claret-like. This wine does not show quite the quality of oak as recent vintages at Faiveley, and its tannins could be sweete ...

1998 Far Niente "Dolce" Napa Valley Dessert Wine (375mL)

All the right elements are there, and in good balance. " (02/2001) Wine Spectator: "The earthy, waxy flavors slowly give way to the sweet, rich, earthy core of fig and butterscotch flavors. Young and unevolved, it shows promise. (JL)" (12/2001) K&L Notes: Dolce is only produced in those years where the right climatic conditions occur to allow the develo ...

1998 Dalla Valle "Maya" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1998 Maya (500 cases from a blend of 45% Cabernet Franc and 55% Cabernet Sauvignon) is an amazing effort, possessing multiple layers of fruit, sweet tannin, and no herbaceousness, astringency, or thinness. This is an amazing tour de force in winemaking for the vintage. It is loaded, with impeccable balance. Anticipated maturity: now-2020. 96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1998 Pavie Decesse is medium to deep garnet-brick in color and explodes with fabulous plum pudding, prunes, blackberry preserves and blueberry pie notes with hints of smoked meats, garrigue, dusty soil, cast iron pan and star anise with dried roses and cinnamon stick wafts. Full-bodied, concentrated and packed with rich exotic spice and black fruit preserves layers, it has loads of mineral and meat sparks and a very, very long, layered finish. Incredible! It has off-the-charts richness and depth on the palate, with layers of sweet fruit and tannin, a smoking mid-palate and serious length. The wine has an opaque purple color and a sweet nose of blackberry liqueur intermixed with road tar, new saddle leather, pepper, and spice. Full-bodied, rich, structured, and backward, this impressive, large-scaled wine admirably marries a degree of finesse with the boldly flavored, big style favored by Australians. 1998 Domaine Faiveley Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru "Cazetiers"

Consistent with this, the nose is displaying soft secondary aromas that include stone, earth and animale notes that also characterize the round, delicious and still admirably intense middle weight flavors that possess fine detail and plenty of vitality on the mildly rustic but mouth coating finish. This is close to being ready but for my taste, I would allow another 2 to 4 years of cellar time. In sum, this is lovely juice and a classic Cazetiers." (01/201 ...

To my palate, the 1998 is good, although I am not convinced it will be long lived. There are 2,300 cases of this 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit-Verdot, and 3% Cabernet Franc blend. Yount, this vineyard was named after the "cairns" or "piles of rocks" that were formed at various locations though-out the property by Indians. The vineyard is dry farmed which results in very concentrated fruit late in the season. The wine is richly structured and powerful. It shows aromas of cherries, anise and herb.
