The Azienda Agricola Barale traces its roots all the way back to 1870 when Barolo wine had just appeared on the scene in the Langhe, promoted by the Marchesi Falletti and Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour. Francesco Barale, great-grandfather of the current owner, was among the pioneers in the production of this blessed wine. Today Sergio Barale and daughters Eleonora and Gloria carry on the centuries old family tradition. The nineteenth-century manor house in the historic center of Barolo is the administrative and commercial headquarters of the company. Ne...

No oak here, just very zesty and ripe Barbera fruit. Bricco Blina is the most straightforward of the three single-vineyard Barberas made at Agostino Pavia. This is the epitome of the bright acidity and berry flavor that are the hallmarks of Barbera, but low yields and old vines give wonderful depth and concentration, too. Notes from the importer: "'Blina' is the name of the vineyard. This wine is a direct, straightforward rendition of the Barbera grape. Fresh acidity and berry flavors are the hallmarks of Barbera, but low yields and old vines give this ...

From importer Oliver McCrum: "Agostino Pavia and his sons Giuseppe ('Pino') and Mauro make two styles of Barbera from two different single vineyards, less than five thousand cases in all. Barbera d'Asti used to have a reputation for having acidity like that of a car battery, apparently due to high yields and an occasional lack of malolactic fermentation. These wines are different, zesty but balanced, with luscious fruit to match the acidity. I drink them with all kinds of food; the very low tannins of barbera make it versatile. The Bricco Blina is delici...

Winemaker's Notes: "A fresh and different take on Foothills Barbera, this wine expresses fresh, fruity aromatics and is lively across the palate. Tannins extracted from the stems during fermentation provide a counterpoint of earthy, herbal aromas, as well as imparting distinctive, fine tannins on the finish. Certified organically grown grapes from the Fairplay AVA.Fermented in two lots, one de-stemmed, and one whole cluster. The whole clusters are gently placed in a covered stainless steel tank, where they undergo a 20 day semi-carbonic fermentation, aft...

Vinous: "The 2018 Barbera d'Asti is fresh, fruity and very easy to like. Sweet red plum, spice and wild flowers are full of energy in this vinous, mid-weight Barbera done mostly in steel with some oak. " (08/2019)

95 points James Suckling: "Intense aromas of crushed blackberries with hot stones and black licorice. Black olives, too. Full body, firm and soft tannins in a light profile. Tar and berry at the end. Great depth and focus. A gorgeous red. " (11/2019) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Vietti 2017 Barbera d'Alba Vigna Scarrone is defined by a spot of sweetness backed by generous layers of dried blackberry, plum and black cherry. This vintage offers a generous level of intensity that is soft and almost succulent in character. There is so much ...

90 points Vinous: "The 2017 Barbera d'Alba is a joyous wine that is sure to put a smile on readers' faces. Pliant, supple and full of character, the 2017 offers superb density and tons of pure deliciousness. Sweet dark cherry, plum, mocha and sweet spice are pushed forward in this engaging, arrestingly beautiful Barbera. Best of all, the 2017 is a superb value. (AG)" (03/2020) 90 points Wine Spectator: "This is round, exuding black cherry, blackberry and iron flavors that are deftly integrated with the polished texture. The flavors build to a lengthy c...

93 points Vinous: "The 2017 Barbera d'Alba Superiore is plush, racy and flat-out delicious. Raspberry jam, cinnamon, dried flowers, sweet tobacco and cedar all flesh out in a forward, plush Barbera that will drink well right out the gate. The Superiore always needs a few years to fully emerge. I imagine that will be the case here as well. Even so, the 2017 is an especially open-knit version of this wine. (AG)" (03/2020) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Bright and juicy, exhibiting ripe plum, fruitcake, blackberry and earth notes. The vivid acidity keeps this...

Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2015 Vigneti Massa "Sentieri" Colli Tortonesi Barbera . Walter Massa is fairly classified as an artisan, a visionary, and savior of sorts. He is widely credited in his native Colli Tortonesi with saving and reviving the nearly extinct Timorasso varietal, from which he now makes some of Piedmont's most distinctive and alluring white wines. Equally stunning, however, are his reds and particularly his Barberas. The Sentieri is his most elegant and forward expression, as it hails from north and east-facing vineyard sites at nearly 1,000 feet above sea level and sees its entire elevage in stainless steel. This 2015 is pure, red fruit pleasure as the tight-knit acidity keeps everything vibrant and fresh through the finish, making it one of the most versatile Barberas we've come across. With a light chill, it will even serve brilliantly as a summer afternoon aperitivo.
Starting Bid: $92.00

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Aromas of black plum and mocha prepare the palate for flavors of blackberry, cassis, pomegranate and thyme. Offering ample mouthfeel and full-fruit flavors amidst slightly grippy tannins, this wine wraps up in a lasting cherry finish. (MD)" (12/2017) Wine & Spirits: "A blend of Barbera and Syrah, this is juicy and plummy, with a salted-caramel sweetness. It’s a simple, welcoming red for charred beef kabobs." (08/2018)
