2002 Piper-Heidsieck "Cuvée Rare" Brut Champagne

97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A gorgeous wine that's a legend in the making, the 2002 Rare Brut is a blend of 70% Chardonnay and 30% Pinot Noir, with just under 10 grams of dosage. Offering incredible notes of stone fruits, brioche, white flowers, and hints of toasted nuts, this flat out awesome wine is concentrated and opulent, yet still dances on the palate with vibrant acidity and great, great finish. It's going to drink beautifully for another two to three decades. Bravo! This cuvee has only been made in 1976, 1979, 1985, 1988, 1990, 1998, 1999, 2002, and ...

2002 Matras Rouge, St-Emilion

According to The Wine Cellar Insider: "Chateau Matras has a long history in Saint Emilion dating all the way back to the 12th century. At the time, the property was used as a church. Chateau Matras was until recently, owned by the Gaboriaud family. This 6.8 hectare Chateau Matras vineyard is planted to 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc. The vines are on average about 35 to 40 years old. The terroir of Chateau Matras is sand and clay with some limestone, chalk and iron deposits. 2002 Billecart-Salmon "Cuvée Nicolas François Billecart" NFB Brut Champagne

98 points James Suckling: "A very composed Champagne with plenty of still fresh lemon and white cherry fruits on offer. There's impressive clarity, power and richness here. The nose has candied peach, strawberry, white cherry and grilled nuts. Very flavorsome palate with pastry flavors adding savory notes to the stone fruits and citrus. Toasted almonds and chalky minerals define the long finish. Still so young and powerful! Drink now." 2002 Dom Pérignon "P2" Brut Champagne

99 points Decanter: "And so from P1 methuselah to P2, which for Geoffroy ‘goes beyond Champagne’. P2, he continues, must be ‘deeper, richer, longer…better than P1' - otherwise why release it? Well, they haven't yet, although it's pencilled in for later in 2019. Here we have drive, vinosity and incredible length. The sweet and savoury balance indulges with a seductive embrace. Gustav Klimt in a glass maybe. Outstanding. Drinking Window 2019 - 2040 (SF)" (11/2018) 98 points John Gilman: "Somehow, I never managed to cross paths with the initial disgorgeme ...

2002 Jones Family Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This 2002 is performing even better than it was in 2005, when I awarded it 92 points. It reveals an inky/blue/purple color in addition to classic notes of black raspberries, blueberries, and blackberry jam. Juicy, succulent and full-bodied with a hint of steely minerality underpinning the wine’s massive fruit, this blend of 99% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Cabernet Franc comes from a vineyard that is farmed by superstar viticulturist David Abreu and was made by Heidi Peterson Barrett. 2002 Thienot "Cuvée Alain Thiénot" Brut Champagne

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Only produced in the best years, such as 2002, this is a 60-40 blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Grand Cru vineyards. This intense wine is well-balanced and packed with fruit tones, yet seems to be just approaching maturity. It is full, generous and tightly textured. (RV)" (12/2015) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Lively and well-knit, this is backed by vibrant acidity that drives flavors of baked pear, grated ginger, marzipan and lemon curd. 2002 Chateau de Ravignan 15 Year Old Folle Blanche Armagnac (750ml)

Distillation of eau de vie at Chateau Ravignan dates back officially to at least 1791 during the French Revolution, but by historical account back to 1731. That’s when the ancestor of Josselin de Ravignan purchased the estate and declared on an official record that some of wine made from the property’s grapes would be used for distillation. At that time, however, it wasn’t known as Armagnac. Distilled spirits were used for a number of medicinal purposes, poured into wine for fortification, and given to sailors to help disinfect their water supplies durin ...

2002 Hanzell Sonoma Valley Pinot Noir

The minerality of crushed rock puts a boundary around the fruit, which is raspberry, black cherry and strawberry-rhubarb compote. It is a darker-toned wine than a typical Hanzell Pinot with exotic spice: black tea and caraway seed, tobacco, chocolate, and a little bit of black pepper. The tannins have good breadth across the palate and indicate the wine will have great longevity.

2002 Joseph Phelps "Backus" Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Backus Vineyard is a massive, youthful blockbuster with an opaque purple color as well as firm tannins (despite the general openness and ripeness of the 2002 Napa Cabernets). Almost overly rich, it has a long evolution ahead of it given its firm tannins and off-the-charts concentration and extract. One has to admire this cuvee for its extraordinary structure and multidimensional personality, but at present, even with airing, the primary aromas of new oak, loamy soil, graphite, incense ...

2002 Louis Roederer "Cristal" Brut Champagne Late Release (Direct from Roederer 2019)

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Roederer's 2002 Cristal is a fabulous wine! Originally released in 2009, it was re-released in March this year—and was sold out in a very short time. The Cristal I tasted at Roederer in May 2018 was disgorged in 2010, after seven years sur lie. Its amazing richness and concentration makes it a forerunner of the 2015 and follows the 1999. A selection of 650 cases that is about two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon and equal parts (about 14% each) Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc, this is one heck of a second wine. Wine & Spirits: "If a wine could ever make you want to pull the top down on your '68 Ferrari convertible, rip off the rearview mirror and take off, this is it. It has a different kind of energy than the '02 Cristal Rosé, which is more ethereal, like strawberries at the right hand of some ancient Gallic god. This is more insolent, brash, earth bound. All the scents and flavors seem to emanate from limestone, as does the acidity, which hits at the front of the mouth and powers through the wine with the kind of solar energy that lifts mist off the white chalk on a cool morning in Cramant. The wine goes on for miles. It's already irresistible, and will only improve with ten, 20, 30 and 40 years of age." (12/2009)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2002 Chateau Montelena "Estate" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (96JD, 96RP, 93ST, 93WE). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This appears to be one of the great efforts from Chateau Montelena, something I think I was correct about when I gave it an 'in the bottle' rating in 2006 of 95+. It is still an amazingly young wine that came from old vines on the famous St. George rootstock that did not require replanting because of the phylloxera epidemic that swept through Napa in the late 1980's and 1990's. Despite its lofty 14.4% alcohol (high by Montelena standards) and the overall flamboyance of the 2002 vintage, it needs another 4-6 years of cellaring. This young, classic Cabernet Sauvignon represents the quintessential traditional school of Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. It possesses an inky/blue/purple color in addition to a tight, but promising nose of black currants, crushed rocks, earth and spice. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, lavish and expansive, cutting a broad swathe across the palate, with a deep, concentrated core of succulent fruit that's framed by ripe, plush tannins, concluding with a lingering finish. At age 16, the 2002 is truly singing, so anyone with bottles in their cellar is due for a treat. The blend is 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot and 8% Petit Verdot, and it attained 13.3% alcohol. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2002 Spottswoode "Estate" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (100RP, 94DC, 93VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "In 2002 very small yields produced only about 3,000 cases at 14.7% natural alcohol and a blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Cabernet Franc. This wine is going from strength to strength since I first tasted it prior to bottling. Now a perfect wine, the incredible perfume of blueberries, black raspberries and cassis, along with white flowers and camphor is extraordinarily fragrant and intense. That is easily matched by the magnificent full-bodied richness and compellingly layered mouthfeel of this wine that is rich, full-bodied and a still youthful vintage that remains capable of another 25-30 years of cellaring. This is a dramatic vintage for Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, and it is always fascinating to taste a top winery’s 2001 and 2002 next to each other because they are both such great years. Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2002 Dalla Valle Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (97RP, 94WS, 90ST). A dense ruby/purple color is followed by aromas and flavors reminiscent of a 4-to-5 year-old wine rather than one that has already hit a decade of age. In fact, it probably needs another 5-10 years of cellaring and should keep for 20-25 more years.
