Laurent-Perrier "Grand Siècle" Iteration #24 Brut Champagne
Review Date: 08-08-2019
Created in 1959, the LP Grand Siècle is easily one of my favorite 'Prestige Cuvées' as it is only made in good vintages and in very limited quantities where striving for excellence and elegance are the main goals. This year they have started to 'batch' their releases to better follow the makeup of the cuvées and maybe for you connoisseurs to start a collection! The Iteration 24 is the twenty fourth time the Laurent-Perrier has released the Grand Siècle and is made up of vintages 2004, 2006 and 2007. This Champagne has a beautiful key lime pie aroma topped with a certain salinity that makes the mouth start watering way before you've even tasted it. The 24th Iteration spends a whopping 11 years on its lees giving this wine an undisputed elegance. Echoing my review for the normal Grand Siècle, you will not get tired drinking this Champagne.

Chateau de Bligny "Clos du Chateau Bligny" 6 Cépages Brut Nature Champagne
Review Date: 08-08-2019
This a very cool champagne. Made from vineyards in an actual 'Clos' designation that has been around since the Cistercien Monks put it there hundreds of years ago. The wine is a bit different in terms of grape makeup as it uses 6 of the 7 permitted varieties in Champagne and are an even sixth of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay, Arbane, Petit Meslier and Pinot Blanc. The wine is wonderfully vibrant with a soft floral component and a beautiful ginger and curry zip to it that I found especially intriguing. If you're craving something different, Clos du Bligny will scratch that itch.

Laurent-Perrier "Grand Siècle" Brut Champagne
Review Date: 08-08-2019
Created in 1959, the LP Grand Siècle is easily one of my favorite 'Prestige Cuvées' as it is only made in good vintages and in very limited quantities where striving for excellence and elegance are the main goals. A wonderfully floral, elegant, aromatic and citrus focused nose are overwhelmingly charming as the palate gives you soft citrus mist with a touch of brioche and buttered sourdough makes this champagne one that doesn't get any less interesting with each sip. This wine is very fun to drink.

2007 Thiénot "Black Ball" Blanc de Blancs Brut Champagne
Review Date: 08-06-2019
Alain Thienot has offered up some pretty lovely bubbles with Black Ball. Originally offered at double this price, this is an amazing Champagne at an amazing offer. Rich nose of biscuits buttered with fleur de sel and a lovely ripe tropical fruit palate. Awesome.

2008 Lanson "Gold Label" Brut Champagne
Review Date: 08-06-2019
This mostly Grand Cru bottling is an outstanding example for powerful big house champagne. Buttered toast nose, with a bowl of ripe peaches near by. These wines do not see malolactic fermentation and thus are full of bone chilling acidity. This wine has a citrus focused with notes of ripe, tropical fruit and a long pretty finish.

2012 Franck Bonville "Pur Avize" Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne
Review Date: 08-06-2019
The Avize vineyards contain a little clay with their chalk but not as much as Oger and kind of take the best of both worlds between Oger and Mesnil with the searing acidity and supple fruit palate. Soft ripe fruit palate, bright acidity but not lightning acidity like in Mesnil but enough to clean your teeth! Yum Yum!

2012 Franck Bonville "Pur Mesnil" Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne
Review Date: 08-06-2019
WHAOH! Bright pear, green apple nose. Saline and razor sharp acidity on the palate. This wine has a wicked long finish and is very expressive of the Grand Cru vineyards in Mesnil for their squeaky clean body and longevity in bottle.

2012 Franck Bonville "Pur Oger" Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne
Review Date: 08-06-2019
This Franck Bonville champagne has a wonderful saline nose with flinty overtones an a ripe round fruit profile. For those that don't enjoy or need the razor sharp focused acidity found in champagnes like the "Pur Mesnil" this Oger rendition is the way to go! The Oger vineyards have enough clay mixed with the chalk that soften up the mouth-feel of these wines and make them easier to put down. Don't pass this up!

2016 La Massa "La Massa" Toscana
Review Date: 07-30-2019
For the money, this is a whole lot of wine! Big and densely fruited nose that will continue to open with some time in the glass or a generous decanting. The palate is vibrant, rich and full of complexity. There is nothing little about this super "good" Tuscan wine.

2016 Greywacke Pinot Noir Marlborough
Review Date: 07-17-2019
What a lovely wine this Greywacke Pinot Noir is! The nose offers up a wonderful spice cabinet of nutmeg and clove and maybe a touch of cinnamon?? The palate is a luscious fruit wonderland of raspberry and strawberry but more on the savory spectrum. This wine is a definite winner to bring around to impress your friends or pair by yourself to your favorite Romantic Comedy! I'm thinking The Devil Wears Prada...

2014 Greywacke Chardonnay Marlborough
Review Date: 07-17-2019
This Greywacke Chardonnay is bananas! SO yummy and delicious. Flinty, mineral nose of matchstick magic and a palate that is like refreshing buttercream. Mouth-watering acidity that won't let you spit (super important for us staff) and topped off with an amazing finish that just won't go away! 07/17 5:58pm

2017 Domaine du Somail "Vin de Plume" Minervois
Review Date: 07-11-2019
Need a 'Clean' wine? This super value wine is bio-dynamic and Demeter certified which basically means is kicks butt. Being of 80% Mourvedre and 20% Syrah this wine is huge! 'Plume' in French means pen but like a fountain pen or it could mean feather, but anyway! This wine definitely resembles the ink that would fill your scribing tool and may give you enough courage to write deep into the night! Beautifully perfumed of dark chocolate and blackberries with blueberry friends and a lovely spice that isn't overly greedy. For any biodynamic wine at $15 I would say it is a steal for just the shear work that is involved but a steal that tastes good too! Come on!

2016 Domaine Lafage "Fundacio" Cotes du Roussillon Villages
Review Date: 07-11-2019
For those of you who are familiar with the Lafage Bastide Miraflors and like it, this Fundacio will probably check all the boxes if you're looking for something bigger and more complex. Great body and acidity with meaty tannins and big succulent fruit. This wine has ageing potential but also will be a great companion for your BBQ needs.

2002 Billecart-Salmon "Le Clos Saint-Hilaire" Brut Blanc de Noirs Champagne
Review Date: 07-09-2019
If you have the opportunity to get this champagne in your glass, you needn't think twice. In Gary Westby's blog post, he mentions "only 3700 bottles, one press load, were made. They have waited 17 years to release this wine." Reading that alone bred a wicked excitement producing goosebumps the size of champagne corks. I was even lucky enough to taste this marvel of a wine and the complexity and depth of aromas are so abundant that mentioning them all here would tire even the most adept readers. In other words, this bottle is worth your hard earned money and should be enjoyed with people who you care about.

2008 Billecart-Salmon Vintage Champagne
Review Date: 07-09-2019
Power and elegance are the two words I would use to describe this champagne. Absolutely spot on with the concentration of toastiness and intense minerality that will carry this wine for many years in the depths of your cellar/wine fridge.

2017 Ceres "Composition" Pinot Noir Bannockburn Central Otago
Review Date: 06-30-2019
Very surprised by this wine! An enticingly spicy nose of raspberry and strawberry tart. The palate has an astonishing freshness with crisp acidity and ripe spicy tannins and finish long and beautiful on the palate. No need to second guess this wine.

2017 Baron de Montfaucon Côtes du Rhône Blanc

2018 Château de Montfaucon Lirac Rosé
Review Date: 06-06-2019
This is the first time that Montfaucon has done a rosé and they definitely nailed it! It shows a fuller bodied structure with raspberry and cherry notes with some nice spice and vibrancy. Think Tavel style but bigger! Bottoms up!

Sonoma Distilling Co. Wheat Whiskey (750ml)
Review Date: 05-23-2019
This whisky stumped me as it was served to me blind in preparation for my spirits exam. I thought it to be a higher end Scotch however this spirit made from mostly wheat and a bit of rye, aged in ex-bourbon barrels and finished in cognac barrels is from Sonoma thus, not a Scotch. Here is my formal tasting notes. Clear, pale gold color with no signs of louching. On the nose the spirit is clean with a medium intensity of caramel, brown sugar, spearmint, dried grass, nutmeg, cinnamon and dark chocolate. This spirit smells matured. The palate is dry with warming alcohol and a medium body with a nice spicy and oily texture. The flavor intensity is pronounced of (everything found on the nose with the addition of toasted oats). The finish is long and very complex. This spirit is outstanding as both the nose and the palate exemplify great complexity and expressiveness of a great grain spirit. I then go on to guess incorrectly. However, I was on the right track as I was thinking it could be a single grain whisky. The take away is that great distilling can happen anywhere, not just Scotland. Of course, anybody that's had bourbon knows this!

Nicolas Maillart "Platine" Brut Champagne
Review Date: 05-07-2019
The new and wonderful Nicolas Maillart Champagnes are now direct imports for K&L and deserve a big hoorah for our Champagne buyer Gary Westby for seeking them out. The Platine is the Brut of their line-up and I felt to be their best and most complex, although they were all pretty stellar. Platine offers up a big intense nose with structure and finesse. Honeysuckle and orange blossom are found, with companions of intensely elegant bubbles that merit the term "mousse fine." The palate has a vibrant acidity with notes of golden apple and white peach and apricot skin. Long and sexy finish that is elegant and saline and would make anyone feel "chic" just drinking it. This Champagne will be very popular in the up and coming years, and is perfect for any occasion or non-occasion!

2018 A.A. Badenhorst "Secateurs" Chenin Blanc Swartland

Looking for a refreshing white that has density and texture but will cool you down? This it IT! The Catullo has a beautiful round fleshy peach aroma with stone fruit qualities as well. The palate is soft and rich with an agreeable acidity and a dab of sweetness that makes this wine perfect for all aperitivos, digestivos and all in between!

2016 Domaine Grand Veneur "Champauvins" Côtes du Rhône-Villages
Review Date: 04-22-2019
What a deliciously refreshing wine! This little guy here is aromatic and exploding with vibrant spicy black cherries and hinting at strawberry glaze. The palate is wonderfully juicy but not cloying whatsoever. Bright and clean with tongue tingling spice and balanced with saliva inducing acidity. I love that there is also a little herbal side to it. If you ever chewed on a leaf from a blackberry bush, you'll know what I mean!

2018 Clos Beylesse Côtes de Provence Rosé
Review Date: 04-08-2019
A new wine at K&L, Clos Beylesse really surprised me in the realm of rosés. It was extremely delicate and soft on both the nose and palate. But to be honest, I really love the blue bottle it comes in, so classy. This Côtes de Provence rosé is delicate showing a nice floral side of rose petal and violet. I love the voluptuous mouth-feel and although it may turn some people off, there is a wonderful soft flavor of strawberry marshmallows and the soft pink color of the wine is pretty gorgeous as well!

2018 Commanderie de la Bargemone Coteaux d'Aix en Provence Rosé
Review Date: 04-08-2019
Great rosé with intensely aromatic nose of grapefruit hard candy and a touch of rose petal. Dry, crisp and refreshing are the perfect easy descriptors for this pink wine but what I really liked were the red apples with a twist of blood orange! So yum!

2016 Domaine La Barroche "Signature" Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Review Date: 03-12-2019
La Barroche is a new one for K&L but I can imagine it will stay. This little guy isn't so little really with tannins that are grainy and mouth-coating, big spicy Grenache driven fruit and beautiful freshness that really make this wine a classic and great example of Châteauneuf du Pape. Not to be missed!

2017 Château de L'Ou "Compartir" Cotes du Roussillon Villages Rouge
Review Date: 03-12-2019
This wine is so cool!!! On the nose this wine showcases smoky, schisty, mocha and coffee bean aromas that are so sexy and savory and make my mouth water with delight. The palate is equally enticing with big juicy fruit and luscious tannins all underlined but great acidity bringing the wine into balance. This wine is just plain 'ol fun and should be drank just because for whatever occasion. Do it. You'll not be sorry.

2017 Chateau de L'Ou "I Have a Dream" Côtes du Roussillon-Villages Rouge
Review Date: 03-12-2019
Séverine Bourrier at Château de l'Ou has created a great mid-range Côte de Rousillon that is big and juicy with fleshy fruit of blackberries and black cherries. For those who don't enjoy tannin this probably isn't for you as this wine packs a punch of mouth-coating luscious tannins that are sure to carry this wine to glory in later years. With summer up and coming this wine will definitely deserve a place on your BBQ table.

2016 Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret Grand Cru Clos Vougeot
Review Date: 01-30-2019
This may be the best wine I've ever tasted. The nose exuberates with layers of ripe cherry, prickly raspberry and earthy notes of sauteed mushrooms and wet soil. The layers that unfold on the nose are extremely interesting as it just keeps opening and giving more and more. The palate is another world of complexity and wonder. Juicy but tight, clean but savory and the tannins, my goodness the tannins! Layers upon layers of beautiful berry fruit and jam coupled with moist earth undertones and a finish that just wouldn't...finish. The overall balance and structure of this wine is one to be remembered for many years and after having tasted it already I would say just about when I am about to forget how it tasted is when it will be time to open the bottle in the cellar!

1995 The Rare Armagnac Collection "Venus" (Domaine de Pouchegu) 23 Year Old K&L Exclusive Vintage Armagnac (750ml)

The Venus should be served out of an elegant, designer perfume bottle. Spiced peaches and cinnamon dance in the nose with promises of clean tasting experience. That experience is a smooth and spicy palate that warmly coats the tongue in sizzling joy.

2016 Château de L'Ou "Secret de Schistes" Côtes Catalanes
Review Date: 12-04-2018
You step out of the back door of your mountain home retreat and walk across the fog laden grass to the stables to visit your prized steed. Your labor burdened hands reach inside the vest pocket of your flannel morning jacket for Grandpa's corncob pipe and slowly begin to pack it without missing a step. As you reach your stallion and caress its mane, your mind drifts to the evenings dinner and the family it will be shared with. A succulent Roasted Pork Shoulder garnished with rosemary and clove and a generous side of your favorite garlic mashed potatoes. A simple but elegant and savory meal to be accompanied by a fitting bottle of wine. Which wine you ask? Why Secret de Schistes of course!

2012 Louis Roederer Brut Champagne
Review Date: 10-11-2018
You’ll be happy to know that all of the Vintage champagne from Roederer are 100% estate grown fruit and organic! The grapes are 30% Chardonnay from Avize and 70% Pinot Noir from Verzenay. This champagne gives a gorgeous richness that is nutty and toasty with notes of fresh red apples and peach and a slight tinge of bitterness on the palate that will make any mouth water.

2009 Alexandre Le Brun "Cuvée Dilection" Brut Rosé Champagne
Review Date: 10-11-2018
Alexandre Le Brun is a very interesting Champagne profile. He harvests on 6 acres and 75% of his fruit is sold to Bollinger and what is leftover is made for his own personal label out of his mother’s basement! Don’t be quick to skip over this one though because this may be one of the most intensely aromatic champagnes I’ve ever come across and definitely one of the most interesting. ‘Cuvee Dilection’ is Le Brun’s Rose champagne and is comprised of 85% Chardonnay and 15% Meunier. 2009 was a warm vintage for Champagne and in turn gave this wine great ripeness, candied red fruit and a delicious perfumed nose of red berried fruit and spices.

Don’t be quick to skip over this one though because this may be one of the most intensely aromatic champagnes I’ve ever come across and definitely one of the most interesting. Cuvee Revelation is made of 100% Meunier from a single vineyard planted in 1950 with some older vines dating back to 1902 making these being some of the first planted after the Phylloxera devastation. This wine gives a nice and savory palate of hibiscus, fresh toast, honey and dried apricot and gorgeous acidity.

Don’t be quick to skip over this one though because this may be one of the most intensely aromatic champagnes I’ve ever come across and definitely one of the most interesting. ‘Cuvee Fascination’ gives beautifully savory ‘Cheeseboard’ –like aromas, assorted chesses, nuts and honey. Even bready notes come through and all backed by powerful concentration of acidity and bubbles. In short, this juice made me very hungry.

Bollinger "Special Cuvée" Brut Champagne
Review Date: 10-11-2018
Bollinger forever to me has been elegant champagne that shows true class. 30% of Bollinger’s wines are aged in wood and all of their reserve wines that make up their very ‘special cuvee’ are aged in magnums which is pretty well agreed upon between all the growers and champagne houses that this yields the most complex aromas. That is what you get with Bollinger, complexity. Wonderful balanced richness with piercingly fresh acidity with just the right amount of richness making this champagne one of my favorites.

Louis Roederer "Brut Premier" Champagne
Review Date: 10-11-2018
The Louis Roederer Brut Premier is as fine a champagne as the next. The nose has succulent golden fruit with hints of fresh toast and the palate exemplifies the perfect balance between richness and freshness. 55% of Roederer’s grapes are estate grown and organic! You’ll be happy to know that all of the Vintage champagne from Roederer are 100% estate grown fruit!

Laurent-Perrier "La Cuvée" Brut Champagne
Review Date: 10-11-2018
“La Cuvee” is the result of LP’s new Non-Vintage cuvee giving a little more Chardonnay and 6 extra months on the lees for a total of 42 months giving ‘La Cuvee’ a freshness with jus the right amount of toasty richness. This is definitely a crowd pleaser and that includes industry professionals as well.

Billecart-Salmon "Brut Réserve" Champagne
Review Date: 10-11-2018
Billecart-Salmon is a medium sized champagne house making some beautiful cuvees and their flagship Brut Reserve is no different. Comprised of 40% Meunier, 30% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay this cuvee is a champagne classic in style and elegance. Billecart-Salmon’s Brut Reserve exemplifies a champagne of know-how and could (should) be any connoisseur’s go-to.
